Entry requirements

Costa Rica visa requirements for Lao citizens

Lao citizens need a visa for Costa Rica and must apply for it before the trip at a consulate or embassy.

How this visa is processed

Costa Rican consulate (consular visa, third group)

Citizens of Laos need a visa for Costa Rica. The General Guidelines on Entry and Stay Visas for Non-Residents of the Directorate General of Migration and Foreign Nationals (La Gaceta, 17 November 2025) place Laos in the third group (consular visa): consular visa, the authorisation issued by a Costa Rican consular officer. It is valid for a single entry, must be stamped in the passport within three months of being authorised and used within 60 working days; the passport must be valid for at least 180 days and the stay is up to 30 days, extendable to 90. It is not needed with a US or Canadian visa or residence permit allowing multiple entries and valid at least on the day of entry (US transit visas C1, C2 and C3 do not count); a residence permit allowing multiple entries or valid for at least 90 days in the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland or an EU country (refugee or asylum status does not count); or a multiple-entry Schengen visa of category C or D.
