Which passport do you hold?

We'll take you straight to the entry requirements for Australia for your nationality.

What we've verified for Australia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2026-08-18). The specifics depend on your nationality — open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au (Department of Home Affairs — official ETA subclass 601 page, validity and stay conditions); malaysia.highcommission.gov.au (official .gov.au subdomain — confirms the AUD 20 service fee); abf.gov.au (Australian Border Force — alcohol/tobacco/general-goods allowances and the AUD 10,000 cash declaration threshold; direct fetch returned a 403 to automated tools, figures confirmed via indexed verbatim quotes of abf.gov.au itself) (checked 18/08/2026).

Australia requires almost every visitor to get travel authorization before boarding: the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) for eligible passports, or a traditional visa for everyone else. The Australian ETA can only be processed through the official app or the Department of Home Affairs website — third-party sites exist that charge much higher fees for the same process.

Visa vs. e-Visa vs. ETA

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Do you need a different visa for Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane?

No. Australia sets the requirements, so entering through Sydney asks for the same as entering through Melbourne or Brisbane. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Australia

Australia is a continent and the distances are vast; you pick one corner. The south-east concentrates the cities — Sydney, with the Opera House (a World Heritage site) and the harbour, and Melbourne — and the Great Ocean Road with the Twelve Apostles. The tropical north-east has the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef in the world and World Heritage, and the Daintree rainforest. The red centre is Uluru, the monolith sacred to Aboriginal peoples, also World Heritage. Australia has 20 UNESCO World Heritage sites, many of them natural. Two weeks cover Sydney, the reef and Uluru, flying between them. Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed: the austral summer (December-February) is hot in the centre and good in the south; the tropical north is visited in the dry season (May-October).
