What we've verified for Bangladesh

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2026-09-17). The specifics depend on your nationality — open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: voa.specialbranch.gov.bd (Bangladesh Police Special Branch — official visa-on-arrival instructions: online application steps, required documents including the invitation letter, 30-day maximum, the immigration officer's discretion, the limitation to travellers from countries with no Bangladeshi embassy, the US$50 fee in cash at the Sonali Bank counter at Dhaka airport; verified via direct fetch); hsia.gov.bd (Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport — customs rules: 200 cigarettes or one carton, one litre of alcohol for foreign passports and a ban for Bangladeshi passports, the FMJ form and currency declaration above US$10,000, weapons and undeclared gold); exteriores.gob.es (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advice for Bangladesh: the practical obligation to apply for the visa at the Embassy in Madrid and the frequent refusal of the visa on arrival to Spanish travellers, passport validity and pages, the US$5,000 cash declaration threshold, the impossibility of converting taka back, yellow fever by country of origin, dengue risk with 575 deaths in 2024, security warnings and areas advised against); bd.usembassy.gov (U.S. Embassy in Dhaka — the US$50 visa-on-arrival fee and US$160 advance visa fee, VoA validity of 15 to 30 days); Bangladeshi press on the December 2024 revision of overstay fines (amounts not confirmed against an official text); whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List) (checked 17 September 2026).

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Do you need a different visa for Dhaka, Chattogram, or Sylhet?

No. Bangladesh sets the requirements, so entering through Dhaka asks for the same as entering through Chattogram or Sylhet. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Bangladesh

Bangladesh gets few tourists for its size — it is the world's eighth most populous country — and those who go usually go for two things: the rivers and the mangroves. The Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest on the planet, shared with India and a World Heritage site since 1997, are the country's only natural site and the habitat of the Bengal tiger; you tour them by boat from Khulna, on multi-day trips through brackish channels. The other two sites on the list, both from 1985, are archaeological: the historic mosque city of Bagerhat, founded in the 15th century by a Sufi ruler, with sixty-odd brick monuments on the delta, and the ruins of the Buddhist vihara at Paharpur, the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas, from the 8th century. Three in all. Off the list, Dhaka is one of the densest cities in the world, with Ahsan Manzil and the Mughal fort of Lalbagh; Sonargaon preserves the abandoned quarter of Panam Nagar; and Cox's Bazar claims the longest continuous natural beach on the planet, 120 kilometres of sand. Security context is needed: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns of terrorist risk and violence at demonstrations, and advises against the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the strip bordering Myanmar and St Martin's Island.
