What we've verified for Belize

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Belize, updated 19 May 2026: three-month passport, invalid documents, ticket, hotel and funds, 30 days for EU citizens, extension up to six months, departure taxes, state of exception in Belize District, risk areas, currency and BZD 10,000 declaration, hurricanes); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/belize (UK Government: digital form, BZD 200 extension per 30 days, land departure tax, minors); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: customs.gov.bz (Belize Customs and Excise Department, "Conditional Exemptions from Duties and Taxes", PDF: accompanied baggage allowances; ).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Belize rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission.

Customs limits

Cash
Money equivalent to 10,000 Belize dollars or more must be declared at the border on a currency import form. The Belize dollar is pegged at 2 to the US dollar, which is accepted almost everywhere.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over: wines or spirits up to 1 litre in total, duty-free, in addition to clothing, jewellery and personal items for own use.
Tobacco
Aged 18 and over: 250 grams of tobacco, or 50 cigars, or 200 cigarettes.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than three months' validity, or trying to enter with an ID card.
  • No onward ticket, hotel booking or sufficient funds.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
  • Minors without the required notarised consent.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Belmopan, Belize City, or San Pedro?

No. Belize sets the requirements, so entering through Belmopan asks for the same as entering through Belize City or San Pedro. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Belize

Belize has one property on the World Heritage List: the Barrier Reef Reserve System, inscribed in 1996, the largest reef system in the northern hemisphere, with atolls, cays, mangroves and the Great Blue Hole. On land there are Maya cities in the jungle, such as Caracol, Xunantunich and Lamanai, and it is the only Central American country with English as its official language. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for extreme caution throughout the country: a state of exception has been in force across much of Belize District since 8 May 2026, and it advises against the adjacency zone with Guatemala and the border crossings with Mexico. Even tourist spots such as Caye Caulker, San Pedro, San Ignacio and Placencia are rated medium risk. The hurricane season runs from June to November and hits the coast hardest.
