What draws travelers to Bulgaria

Bulgaria packs Orthodox monasteries, Thracian and Roman ruins, and Black Sea coast into a small area. Rila Monastery, in the mountains south of Sofia, is the largest in the country and the symbol of the Bulgarian cultural revival — a World Heritage site — and on the edge of the capital the small Boyana Church holds 13th-century frescoes that anticipate the Renaissance. Nesebar, on a Black Sea peninsula, layers Thracian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine remains in an old town that is also protected. The Thracian legacy shows in the painted tombs of Kazanlak and Sveshtari and in the Madara Rider, a relief carved into a cliff. For nature, Pirin National Park (high glacial mountains) and the Srebarna reserve (a Danube wetland, birdlife) round out the list. Bulgaria has 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Sofia, Plovdiv (one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe) and the Rose Valley fit well into a week; adding the coast or the Rila and Pirin mountains calls for more days. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes the country is in a seismic zone and advises against driving at night because of the poor condition and signage of some roads.
