Ecuador applies one of the world's most open entry policies: most nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days, though a specific group of countries (mostly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East) does need a visa in advance. Ecuador accepts the national ID card, not the passport, as a valid entry document for citizens of Andean Community countries (Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru).
This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

The Galápagos Islands: what changes
Having entered Ecuador does not give you access to the Galápagos. Anyone arriving in the province as a tourist or in-transit traveller needs the Transit Control Card issued by the Governing Council of the Special Regime, required under article 29 of its rules and costing 20 dollars for adults, with under-twos exempt. You show it both entering and leaving the province. You can pre-register online and collect it at the Council's own counters in the Quito and Guayaquil airports.

Do you need a different visa for Quito, Guayaquil, or Cuenca?
No. Ecuador sets the requirements, so entering through Quito asks for the same as entering through Guayaquil or Cuenca. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
With one exception, explained above: the rules for The Galápagos Islands are not the rules for the rest of Ecuador.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travelers to Ecuador
Ecuador is small and holds four worlds: coast, Andes, Amazon and the Galápagos. Quito, the high-altitude capital, has the best-preserved colonial historic centre in Latin America, a World Heritage site since 1978. From there runs the "avenue of the volcanoes" — Cotopaxi, Baños, the Otavalo market — and the Amazon rainforest is a few hours down. But the big draw is the Galápagos Islands, a World Heritage site and Biosphere Reserve, the archipelago that inspired Darwin, with wildlife that does not flee the visitor. Ecuador has 5 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ten days cover Quito, the Andes and a short Galápagos cruise. Being on the equator, there are no marked seasons; in the Galápagos the dry season (June-December) has colder seas and more marine life.
