What draws travelers to Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea is the only African country with Spanish as an official language, and that alone explains much of the interest it attracts in Spain. Territorially it is two worlds: the island of Bioko, volcanic and humid, home to Malabo and Pico Basilé — 3,011 metres — and the mainland region of Río Muni, with Monte Alén National Park and its forest of gorillas, chimpanzees and forest elephants. The Luba caldera, in southern Bioko, is a scientific reserve with sea turtle nesting beaches; Annobón, tiny and remote, has a lake inside a crater. There is no site inscribed on the World Heritage List: the country ratified the Convention in 2010 and keeps six candidacies on its tentative list, among them Monte Alén, Pico Basilé, the Luba caldera, the Annobón reserve, the neo-Gothic church of Batete and the island of Corisco. Spanish colonial architecture survives above all in Malabo's old town and in a few buildings in Bata; Sipopo and the new administrative capital of Ciudad de la Paz (Oyala) are, by contrast, recent oil-financed projects. Necessary context: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelling with caution because of the deterioration in public safety and warns that taking photographs, especially of official or military installations, can cause serious problems.
