What we've verified for Ethiopia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Ethiopia, updated 23 September 2026: visa types, Embassy of Ethiopia in Paris, end of multiple entries, land borders, authorisation for Tigray and Afar, extension at Arat Kilo, overstay fine, airport transit, vaccinations, currency, areas to avoid); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/ethiopia (UK Government: 30-day single entry visa, USD 30 daily fine, birr and cash declaration limits, mpox survey); evisa.gov.et (official e-visa portal); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Ethiopia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, or who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of those countries. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that, although it is unusual, officials may ask any traveller for the vaccination card on entry.
  • Ethiopia is a yellow fever risk area, so the certificate may be needed for onward travel to other countries. Spain's Ministry of Health recommends the vaccine from nine months of age, except for itineraries limited to the Afar and Somali provinces.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash above 10,000 US dollars or equivalent (500 dollars if entering overland) must be declared on entry and exit, and the form and exchange receipts kept for departure. Only 3,000 birr can be brought in or taken out (10,000 when travelling to Djibouti). Any excess can be seized and lead to prison.

Overstay penalties

The UK Government gives the fine as 30 US dollars per day of overstay, and you cannot leave the country until it is paid in full. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds that you must report to immigration in Addis Ababa, leave the country immediately after paying and that, depending on the days accumulated, the fine can reach thousands of dollars.

Grounds for refusal

  • Arriving at a land border without a visa obtained beforehand: none are issued there.
  • Entering on a tourist visa to work, volunteer or do business.
  • A passport valid for less than six months.
  • Not carrying a yellow fever certificate when arriving from a country with risk of transmission.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Addis Ababa, Lalibela, or Gondar?

No. Ethiopia sets the requirements, so entering through Addis Ababa asks for the same as entering through Lalibela or Gondar. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Ethiopia

Ethiopia has twelve properties on the World Heritage List. The best known were among the first inscribed, in 1978 and 1980: the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Simien National Park and ancient Aksum. They are joined by Fasil Ghebbi in the Gondar region (1979), the walled town of Harar (2006), the Konso cultural landscape (2011), the lower valleys of the Omo and the Awash, and in recent years Bale Mountains National Park and the Gedeo cultural landscape (2023). Security shapes the itinerary: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends travelling with great caution, recalls the shooting of a Spanish citizen in the Omo valley in May 2024, advises flying rather than driving between regions, advises against camping and adventure sports, and warns that the Tigray and Afar regions may require a prior permit.
