What we've verified for Hong Kong

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for China, updated 12 June 2026, Hong Kong sections: 90 days visa-free, six-month validity, unofficial stamps, work and residence, checks with Macao and mainland China, typhoons); customs.gov.hk (Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department: alcohol and tobacco allowances in force since 1 August 2010; declaration above HKD 120,000 and penalties, Cap. 629, via a search restricted to the official domain); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/hong-kong (UK Government: validity, e-cigarettes from 30 April 2026, CBD, prohibited items, yellow fever); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: immd.gov.hk (Hong Kong Immigration Department, visit and transit FAQs: section 41 of the Immigration Ordinance, HK$50,000 fine and two years in prison, extensions, 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Hong Kong rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No mandatory vaccines according to the list the WHO publishes under the International Health Regulations, which records no yellow fever requirement for Hong Kong. The UK Government, however, says a certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission, so anyone coming from one should carry it.

Customs limits

Cash
Anyone arriving with cash or bearer negotiable instruments worth more than 120,000 Hong Kong dollars in total must declare them in the red channel; an electronic form can be filled in beforehand. A first offence can be settled by paying HKD 2,000; otherwise the maximum penalty is HKD 500,000 and two years in prison.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over: 1 litre of drinks over 30% duty-free, for personal use. Failing to declare anything above the allowance can lead to prosecution.
Tobacco
Aged 18 and over: 19 cigarettes, or 1 cigar or 25 grams of cigars, or 25 grams of other tobacco, duty-free. E-cigarettes and heated tobacco are prohibited.

Overstay penalties

Staying beyond the time granted breaches the conditions of stay, which is an offence under section 41 of the Immigration Ordinance (Chapter 115): the maximum penalty is a fine of 50,000 Hong Kong dollars and two years in prison. Having applied for an extension does not protect you unless it is approved before the limit expires.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with unofficial tourist stamps, which the Chinese authorities regard as invalid.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity: airlines usually refuse boarding.
  • Carrying e-cigarettes, heated tobacco or CBD products.
  • Coming to work without the relevant visa or residence permit.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Hong Kong, Kowloon, or Lantau?

No. Hong Kong sets the requirements, so entering through Hong Kong asks for the same as entering through Kowloon or Lantau. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Hong Kong

Hong Kong has no World Heritage properties of its own; the nearest are in the historic centre of Macao, an hour away by ferry. A trip here is mostly about the city: the skyline of Victoria Harbour from the Peak or the Star Ferry, the Kowloon markets, temples such as Man Mo and the fishing villages of the outlying islands. More than half the territory is country parks, with hiking routes such as the MacLehose Trail, and Lantau has the big Tian Tan Buddha. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out that tap water is drinkable, traffic drives on the left, public transport covers the whole territory and, in typhoon season, you should follow the Observatory's warnings.
