Hungary is part of both the Schengen Area and the European Union, with the same short-stay limit (90 days within any 180-day period) as the rest of the bloc for visa-exempt passports. Hungary hasn't adopted the euro: its official currency remains the Hungarian forint (HUF).

Do you need a different visa for Budapest, Debrecen, or Szeged?
No. Hungary sets the requirements, so entering through Budapest asks for the same as entering through Debrecen or Szeged. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travelers to Hungary
Hungary centres on Budapest, one of the most monumental capitals in Central Europe. The city, split by the Danube, has the two riverbanks, the Buda Castle quarter and Andrássy Avenue — with the oldest metro on the continent after London's — inscribed as World Heritage. The other trademark is the thermal baths — the Széchenyi, the Gellért — an Ottoman legacy. Outside the capital, Lake Balaton, the Hungarian "sea"; the Tokaj wine region, also World Heritage; and the Puszta plain. Hungary has 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Three or four days are enough for Budapest at an easy pace, with room for a day trip to the Danube Bend and its towns of Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is hot and can be humid, and December brings the Advent markets and the steaming outdoor baths.
