Ireland is a member of the European Union but not the Schengen Area: it maintains its own border regime within the Common Travel Area it shares with the United Kingdom, so the Schengen 90/180-day rule does not apply when entering Ireland. Thanks to the Common Travel Area, British and Irish citizens can move between both countries without passport control or a stay limit: a regime independent of either country's EU or Schengen membership.

Ireland rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Declare to Customs if entering or leaving the EU through an Irish port or airport with €10,000 or more in cash (an EU-harmonised regime, Regulation (EU) 2018/1672). In addition, under the Criminal Justice Act 1994 (as amended in 2005), a customs officer can search for, seize, and retain cash from as little as €1,000 if they suspect it's connected to criminal activity.
- Alcohol
- Arriving from outside the EU (over 17 years old): 1 litre of spirits, or 2 litres of other alcoholic drinks with no more than 22% alcohol.
- Tobacco
- 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco.
Overstay penalties
Under section 5 of the Immigration Act 2004, a foreigner who remains in Ireland without permission is "for all purposes" unlawfully present. The general penalty for offences under this Act: including unlawful presence; is set out in section 13(1): a fine of up to €3,000, or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, on summary conviction.
Grounds for refusal
- Failing to satisfy the immigration officer with your documents or your explanations: holding a valid visa does not guarantee entry, and you can still be refused at the border.
- The officer considering that you are not in a position to support yourself and any dependants travelling with you.
- Coming to Ireland for a different reason from the one you state to the immigration officer.
- Intending to take up employment without the relevant permit.
- Criminal convictions, or not holding the visa required for your nationality.
- Having one of the medical conditions in Schedule 1 of the Immigration Act 2004, being subject to a deportation order in force, or the officer finding national security or public policy grounds (s. 4(3)).

Do you need a different visa for Dublin, Cork, or Galway?
No. Ireland sets the requirements, so entering through Dublin asks for the same as entering through Cork or Galway. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Ireland
Ireland is best driven around its edge: the west coast holds almost all the scenery. The Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, the Dingle peninsula and Connemara are stages on the Wild Atlantic Way. In the south-west, County Cork and the city of Galway as a cultural base. Dublin, the capital, is a city of literature (Joyce, Wilde, Beckett) with Trinity College and the Book of Kells. The great prehistoric heritage is Brú na Bóinne, with the mounds of Newgrange (5,000 years old, older than the pyramids), a World Heritage site; the country's other site is the island monastery of Skellig Michael. Ireland has 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites. A week covers Dublin plus a stretch of the west coast. May to September has more daylight and less rain, but expect showers in any month.
