Kyrgyzstan rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, or who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of them.
Customs limits
- Cash
- There is no limit on bringing in foreign currency, but it must be declared to customs on arrival, and any amount over 3,000 US dollars must be declared. Prescription medicines must also be declared, with the doctor's prescription.
Overstay penalties
Exceeding the permitted stay, even very briefly, can mean a fine and deportation, and extensions are not always possible. To leave after overstaying you must regularise your situation with an exit visa (type L), valid for up to 10 days.
Grounds for refusal
Apply to: Visa-free
- Having exceeded 30 visa-free days within the 60-day period.
- A passport valid for less than six months after the visa expires.
- Carrying undeclared medicines that require a prescription in Kyrgyzstan.

Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Bishkek, Osh, or Karakol?
No. Kyrgyzstan sets the requirements, so entering through Bishkek asks for the same as entering through Osh or Karakol. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan has three properties on the World Heritage List. Sulaiman-Too Sacred Mountain, in Osh, was inscribed in 2009. The Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor section of the Silk Roads, shared with China and Kazakhstan, followed in 2014, and Western Tien-Shan, a natural property shared with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, in 2016. For travellers from Spain entry is simple, as no visa is needed for stays of under 30 days. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends travelling with caution and taking extra care on the border with Tajikistan, especially in the Batken region, in the south-west.
