Liechtenstein rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry. Liechtenstein does not ask any traveller for a yellow fever certificate, wherever they arrive from, according to the list the WHO publishes under the International Health Regulations.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Swiss rules apply, because Switzerland runs Liechtenstein's customs. Cash does not have to be declared on your own initiative, but from 10,000 Swiss francs customs can ask about identity, the source and the intended use of the money, and you must answer truthfully.
- Alcohol
- Swiss rules, for adults: 5 litres of drinks up to 18% and 1 litre over 18%, duty-free.
- Tobacco
- Swiss rules: 250 cigarettes, or cigars, or heated tobacco products, or equivalent cartridges, duty-free per person per day.
Overstay penalties
Exceeding 90 days can lead to an entry ban on the Schengen countries of up to three years, according to the UK Government. As a Schengen State, Liechtenstein can issue a return decision and record the ban in the Schengen Information System, which makes it apply across the whole area. The amount of any fine could not be confirmed against national law, so no figure is given.

Apply to: Visa-free
- Not presenting a valid travel document: valid for at least three months after the intended departure and issued within the previous ten years (Art. 6(1)(a)).
- Not justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, or not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return (Art. 6(1)(c)).
- Having already used up the 90 days within the current 180-day period (Art. 6(1)).
- Being the subject of a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 6(1)(d)).
- Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(e)).
Source: Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code) , Art. 6(1). A refusal is given in writing with its reasons and can be appealed (Art. 14).
Apply to: Visa required
- A false travel document, or reasonable doubts about the authenticity of the documents submitted (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
- Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the trip (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii)).
- Failing to show sufficient means for the stay and the return (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)); Liechtenstein's reference is about 100 Swiss francs a day.
- Having already used the 90 days of the current 180-day period (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
- Having an alert in the Schengen Information System for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
- Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security or public health (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
- Not presenting valid travel medical insurance where required (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
- Reasonable doubts about the intention to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).
Travel insurance for the Schengen area
If you need a visa, insurance is part of the application: €30,000 of medical cover across Schengen. If you enter visa-free it isn't mandatory, though it's worth having.

Do you need a different visa for Vaduz, Schaan, or Balzers?
No. Liechtenstein sets the requirements, so entering through Vaduz asks for the same as entering through Schaan or Balzers. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is an Alpine principality of about 160 square kilometres between Switzerland and Austria, in the Rhine valley, and can be seen in a day. The capital, Vaduz, sits below the princely castle, which is a private residence and cannot be visited inside. The rest of the country is mountain villages and hiking routes, with Malbun as its winter resort. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs regards it as a very safe country with no risk areas, and notes that, as elsewhere in the Alps, you should watch out for snow and mud avalanches during the thaw and for heavy summer storms, so check the forecast before heading into the mountains.
