What we've verified for Malawi

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 3 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Malawi, updated 9 June 2026: 50-dollar visa on arrival or online, 30 days, onward ticket, volunteering, currency, photography, security); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/malawi (UK Government: multiple-entry visas, yellow fever); immigration.gov.mw and evisa.gov.mw (Malawi Department of Immigration); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 3 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Malawi rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission, except infants under one year.

Customs limits

Cash
Only 5,000 dollars in foreign currency can be taken out of the country, so keep the bank or ATM receipt to show where the money came from. Tourist stays are paid in foreign currency (international card, euros or dollars), not in kwacha. School supplies, medicines or other goods brought to donate may be charged duty and need paperwork.

Overstay penalties

Spain's Foreign Ministry warns that staying in Malawi without the required permit can lead to detention and expulsion.

Grounds for refusal

  • Not carrying an onward ticket within the 30-day stay.
  • Entering to volunteer without the prior work permit.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity or without three blank pages.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

IATI sells its policies according to the country you live in. Where do you live?

Do you need a different visa for Lilongwe, Blantyre, or Mzuzu?

No. Malawi sets the requirements, so entering through Lilongwe asks for the same as entering through Blantyre or Mzuzu. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Malawi

Malawi has three properties on the World Heritage List. Lake Malawi National Park, inscribed in 1984, protects the southern end of the lake, with hundreds of fish species, nearly all endemic. The Chongoni Rock-Art Area, inscribed in 2006, gathers 127 painted sites in the granite hills of the central plateau, and the Mount Mulanje Cultural Landscape, inscribed in 2025, is a mountain held sacred by the Yao, Mang'anja and Lhomwe peoples. Spain's Foreign Ministry flags no risk areas and rates towns and tourist centres as safe by day. It asks for care around hippos and crocodiles near the lake and some rivers, and the lake carries schistosomiasis.
