What we've verified for Nicaragua

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2026-09-17). The specifics depend on your nationality — open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Nicaragua and the Spanish Embassy in Managua: visa exemption up to 90 days, passport validity, migration form and advance submission to solicitudes@mint.gob.ni, 10 USD entry fee, exit visa for residents, fine of ~3 USD per day of irregular stay, yellow fever requirement by country of origin, customs allowances and banned items, cash declaration from 10,000 USD); mint.gob.ni (Ministry of the Interior — General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners, Disposición No. 002-2026 changing visa migration categories, in force since 16 February 2026; the portal blocks direct fetching and the PDF published on inac.gob.ni is a scan with no text layer, so the content was cross-checked against the Consortium Legal, Central Law and Lexology analyses that reproduce the categories and against the list of visa-free countries, in which Spain appears); sica.int/ocam (Central American Integration System — CA-4 free movement agreement); whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List) (checked 17 September 2026).

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Do you need a different visa for Managua, Granada, or Leon?

No. Nicaragua sets the requirements, so entering through Managua asks for the same as entering through Granada or Leon. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and the one that receives the fewest tourists in the region, which explains much of its appeal and also its difficulties. The classic axis is the two rival colonial cities: Granada, on the shore of Lake Cocibolca, with its courtyard houses and bell towers, and León, a university town with a liberal tradition, whose cathedral — the largest in Central America, with startlingly white vaults — has been a World Heritage site since 2011. On the outskirts of León lie the ruins of León Viejo, the city buried by the eruption of Momotombo volcano in 1610 and the first Nicaraguan site inscribed on the list, in 2000; they are the country's only two. The rest of the interest is volcanic and lacustrine: Ometepe Island, two volcanoes joined by an isthmus inside the lake, is a biosphere reserve; Masaya lets you look into a crater with visible lava; and the Maribios chain strings together cones you can climb in a day. On the Pacific coast, San Juan del Sur is the surf hub; on the Caribbean side, the Corn Islands offer reef and a different, Creole and English-speaking rhythm. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises extreme caution throughout the trip: there is a high risk of robbery and theft, and travellers should avoid marginal neighbourhoods and use registered taxis.
