How much money you need to show

PLN 300 for stays of up to 4 days, or PLN 75 for each day of a longer stay

It drops to PLN 20 per day, with a PLN 100 minimum, if you are on an organised tour, at a camp or a sports event, or if your stay is already paid for. On top of that you need money for the return journey: PLN 200 if you come from a neighbouring country, PLN 500 from another EU country and PLN 2,500 from outside the EU.

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare in writing to the Customs and Tax Service (KAS) or the Border Guard if entering or leaving the EU with €10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in another currency, including złoty), an EU-harmonised regime (Regulation (EU) 2018/1672).

Alcohol

Arriving from outside the EU (age 17+): 1 litre of spirits over 22% alcohol; plus 2 litres of beverages under 22% (including sparkling and fortified wines); plus 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer. These limits are the same by air/sea and by land.

Tobacco

By air or sea: 200 cigarettes (or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of pipe tobacco). By land: a reduced limit of 40 cigarettes (or 20 cigarillos, or 10 cigars, or 50 grams of pipe tobacco).

Overstay penalties

Staying in Poland without legal grounds is a petty offence punishable by a fine (Act on Foreigners of 12 December 2013, Art. 465(1)(1)). That Act sets no specific amount for this case, so the general range of the Code of Petty Offences (Kodeks wykroczeń, Art. 24(1)) applies: PLN 20 to 5,000, set according to the offender's income, personal and family circumstances, financial situation and earning capacity (Art. 24(3)). Separately from the fine, the Border Guard (Straż Graniczna) as a rule issues a return decision (Arts. 302(1) and 310), except in the cases exempted by Art. 303, and that decision includes a ban on re-entering Poland and the rest of the Schengen area (Art. 318). For someone who has overstayed, with or without a visa, that ban lasts from 6 months to 3 years (Art. 319(1)(1)), and it is extended until the costs of the return decision are paid, up to a maximum of 5 years (Art. 319(2)). Periods of 5 to 10 years are reserved for reasons of defence, state security or public order (Art. 319(1)(4)). If the decision grants a period for voluntary departure, the authority may choose not to impose the ban where there is a high likelihood that the foreigner will respect the law on a future entry (Art. 318(1a)). A ban already imposed can be revoked at the foreigner's request if they show, for example, that they complied with the return decision, although, except on humanitarian grounds, not before half of the ban has run (Art. 320).

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

• Not presenting a valid travel document: valid for at least three months after the intended departure and issued within the previous ten years (Art. 6(1)(a)).
• Not justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, or not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return (Art. 6(1)(c)).
• Having already used up the 90 days within the current 180-day period (Art. 6(1)).
• Being the subject of a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 6(1)(d)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(e)).

Apply to: Visa required

• Producing a false or falsified travel document, or reasonable doubts arising about the authenticity of the supporting documents submitted or the truthfulness of their content (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
• Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii); the same entry condition appears in Art. 6(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399, so it is also checked at the border).
• Failing to provide proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the whole intended stay and for the return to the country of origin or residence, and not being in a position to acquire such means lawfully (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)).
• Having already used up the 90 days of stay within the current 180-day period on the territory of the Member States (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
• Being the subject of an alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any Member State (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
• Failing to provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance, where applicable (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
• Reasonable doubts arising about the reliability of the statements made or about the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the visa applied for expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).
