What we've verified for San Marino

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for San Marino, updated 7 March 2025: ID card or passport, visa-free entry from Schengen States, vaccinations, prices and Italian customs); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/san-marino (UK Government: travel through Italy, passport validity, Schengen entry stamp, 90-day rule, registration with the Gendarmerie beyond 30 days, customs as in Italy); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 2 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

San Marino rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No vaccinations are required, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Customs limits

Cash
The same rules as in Italy apply, according to the UK Government.
Alcohol
The same rules as in Italy. Prices are usually lower than in Italy because of the tax system, but Italian customs may charge surcharges when you cross back into Italy.
Tobacco
The same rules as in Italy; anything that may be taxable or prohibited must be declared.

Overstay penalties

Going over 90 days counts as an irregular stay in the Schengen area, because days in San Marino are added to Schengen days. Staying longer than 30 days without registering with the Gendarmerie breaks San Marino's rules. The amount of the penalties could not be confirmed against an official source.

Grounds for refusal

  • Not holding a Schengen visa when your nationality requires one, which prevents entry into Italy.
  • Not having a valid Schengen entry stamp in the passport.
  • Having already used the 90 days of the 180-day period.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for San Marino, Serravalle, or Borgo Maggiore?

No. San Marino sets the requirements, so entering through San Marino asks for the same as entering through Serravalle or Borgo Maggiore. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to San Marino

San Marino has one property on the World Heritage List, inscribed in 2008: its historic centre and Mount Titano. The walls, towers and bastions, the neoclassical basilica, the Public Palace and the Titano Theatre bear witness to a free republic that has lasted since the Middle Ages, and the centre is still lived in and keeps its institutional functions. Most visitors come on a day trip from Rimini or the Emilia-Romagna coast. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rates the whole country as trouble-free.
