We'll take you straight to the entry requirements for Slovenia for your nationality.

What we've verified for Slovenia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: home-affairs.ec.europa.eu (European Commission, Annex 25 of the Practical Handbook for Border Guards, version of 1 April 2026: 70 euros a day and half for accompanied minors, under the Slovenian rules published in Uradni list RS 29/07); EUR-Lex: Regulation (EC) 810/2009 (Arts. 9, 16, 23 and 32), Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1415, Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (Art. 6), Directive 2007/74/EC (Arts. 8 and 9) and Regulation (EU) 2018/1672; gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/slovenia (UK Government: on-the-spot fine, holding of documents, ban of up to three years, police registration within three days, cash declaration); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Slovenia, updated 10 September 2026: passport or ID card, no visa, petty theft); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Slovenia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.

Vaccinations

  • No mandatory vaccines for entry. Slovenia does not ask any traveller for a yellow fever certificate, wherever they arrive from, according to the list the WHO publishes under the International Health Regulations.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash or travellers' cheques from 10,000 euros must be declared when entering or leaving the EU (Regulation (EU) 2018/1672). Customs gives you a stamped declaration; without it the money can be held when you leave.
Alcohol
From outside the EU, aged 17 and over: 1 litre of drinks over 22% or 2 litres at 22% or under, plus 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer (Directive 2007/74/EC, Art. 9).
Tobacco
From outside the EU, aged 17 and over and arriving by air: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco (Directive 2007/74/EC, Art. 8). Meat, milk and products containing them cannot be brought in.

Overstay penalties

Exceeding 90 days can mean a fine collected on the spot; if it is not paid, the border police can hold documents or assets until it is. An entry ban on the Schengen countries of up to three years can also be imposed, according to the UK Government. The amount of the fine could not be confirmed against the Slovenian Foreigners Act.

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

  • Not presenting a valid travel document: valid for at least three months after the intended departure and issued within the previous ten years (Art. 6(1)(a)).
  • Not justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, or not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return (Art. 6(1)(c)).
  • Having already used up the 90 days within the current 180-day period (Art. 6(1)).
  • Being the subject of a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 6(1)(d)).
  • Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(e)).

Source: Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code) , Art. 6(1). A refusal is given in writing with its reasons and can be appealed (Art. 14).

Apply to: Visa required

  • A false travel document, or reasonable doubts about the authenticity of the documents submitted (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
  • Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the trip (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii)).
  • Failing to show sufficient means for the stay and the return (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)); Slovenia's reference is 70 euros a day.
  • Having already used the 90 days of the current 180-day period (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
  • Having an alert in the Schengen Information System for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
  • Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security or public health (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
  • Not presenting valid travel medical insurance where required (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
  • Reasonable doubts about the intention to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).

Travel insurance for the Schengen area

If you need a visa, insurance is part of the application: €30,000 of medical cover across Schengen. If you enter visa-free it isn't mandatory, though it's worth having.

Do you need a different visa for Ljubljana, Maribor, or Piran?

No. Slovenia sets the requirements, so entering through Ljubljana asks for the same as entering through Maribor or Piran. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Slovenia

Slovenia has five properties on the World Heritage List in a country you can drive across in a few hours. The Škocjan Caves, with one of the largest underground canyons known, are its only purely national natural site. In Ljubljana, the works of the architect Jože Plečnik (bridges, markets, the national library and the riverside walks) are inscribed as a way of designing the city for the people who walk it. Idrija shares the Heritage of Mercury with Almadén in Spain. The list is completed by the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Alps, in the Ljubljana Marshes, and the primeval beech forests Slovenia shares with 17 other countries. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs rates crime as low, but warns that thefts of bags, wallets and bicycles have risen, especially in tourist areas and on buses.
