Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.

Customs limits

Cash

You must declare to Tullverket (Swedish Customs) if you enter or leave Sweden carrying €10,000 or more in cash or equivalent assets (traveller's cheques and investment gold, among others), or the equivalent in another currency. Since 1 April 2026 this also applies to journeys to or from another EU country. The declaration can be made online and is free; there is no upper limit on cash.

Alcohol

You must be at least 20. Arriving from outside the EU, after at least 20 hours abroad or on a commercial flight, the following enters tax-free: 1 litre of spirits over 22% vol., or 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine (over 15% and up to 22% vol.); plus 4 litres of wine up to 15% vol. and 16 litres of beer over 3.5% vol. Anything above those amounts is declared in the red channel and pays duty and tax.

Tobacco

You must be at least 18. Arriving from outside the EU: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, or a proportional mix (for example, 100 cigarettes and 25 cigars).

Overstay penalties

Chapter 20, Section 1 of the Aliens Act (Utlänningslag, 2005:716) punishes with a fine a foreign national who stays in Sweden, intentionally or through negligence, without the required permit and without having applied for one. Minor cases are only prosecuted when the public interest justifies it. The Act sets no amount: under the Swedish Criminal Code (Brottsbalk, Chapter 25), the fine is imposed as "dagsböter" (day-fines), between 30 and 150 days at a daily amount of SEK 50 to 1,000 set according to the offender's income and assets, or, where the case merits fewer than 30 day-fines, as a fixed fine of SEK 200 to 4,000. Since 1 September 2026, Section 2 of the same chapter punishes with imprisonment of six months to two years (in minor cases, a fine or up to six months) anyone who intentionally stays in Sweden despite having no right to return because of an expulsion already carried out, ordered by a court following a criminal offence.

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

• Not presenting a valid travel document: valid for at least three months after the intended departure and issued within the previous ten years (Art. 6(1)(a)).
• Not justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, or not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return (Art. 6(1)(c)).
• Having already used up the 90 days within the current 180-day period (Art. 6(1)).
• Being the subject of a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 6(1)(d)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(e)).

Apply to: Visa required

• Producing a false or falsified travel document, or reasonable doubts arising about the authenticity of the supporting documents submitted or the truthfulness of their content (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
• Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii); the same entry condition appears in Art. 6(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399, so it is also checked at the border).
• Failing to provide proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the whole intended stay and for the return to the country of origin or residence, and not being in a position to acquire such means lawfully (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)).
• Having already used up the 90 days of stay within the current 180-day period on the territory of the Member States (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
• Being the subject of an alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any Member State (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
• Failing to provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance, where applicable (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
• Reasonable doubts arising about the reliability of the statements made or about the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the visa applied for expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).
