What we've verified for Tajikistan

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: evisa.tj (official e-Visa portal of the Consular Department of Tajikistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs: stays of up to 60 days, payment in dollars, matching the passport, overstay penalties); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Tajikistan: 30-day exemption for 52 countries, 45-day visas, prior application, OVIR registration, Gorno-Badakhshan, risk areas, vaccinations, HIV); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tajikistan (UK Government, updated 19 August 2026: passport validity, processing times, exit visa, transit, Khatlon permit, cash); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 2 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Tajikistan rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.

Vaccinations

  • Anyone staying longer than 90 days must show a medical certificate stating they are HIV-free or take the test in Tajikistan.

Customs limits

Cash
Up to 10,000 US dollars (or the equivalent) may be brought in without declaring; anything above must be declared before entry. Up to 3,000 dollars may be taken out without declaring, and above 10,000 you must document where the money came from. Keep the entry declaration until you leave.

Overstay penalties

Staying longer than the visa or exemption allows, even briefly, can lead to a fine, deportation or a ban on returning for a period. You also cannot leave the country until you obtain an exit visa, which is paid for at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Office and is not issued at airports.

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

  • A passport with less than six months' validity or without blank pages.

Apply to: Visa on arrival, e-Visa, Visa required

  • Arriving without a visa when your nationality requires one: you can be detained, fined and deported, paying for the ticket out.
  • e-Visa details that do not match the passport.
  • The wrong type of visa for the trip.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity or without blank pages.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamirs): what changes

The Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region requires a special permit on top of the visa or exemption. It can be requested with the e-Visa, by ticking the relevant box, at a Tajik embassy or, once in the country, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or OVIR. The permit lists in the passport the places you may visit and does not cover Lake Sarez. The Government sometimes stops issuing it at short notice for security reasons.

Afghan border in the Khatlon region: what changes

Going within 20 kilometres of the Afghan border in the Khatlon region, including Panj and Kumsangir, requires a permit from the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dushanbe, requested before travelling there. The land border with Afghanistan is closed.

Do you need a different visa for Dushanbe, Khujand, or Khorog?

No. Tajikistan sets the requirements, so entering through Dushanbe asks for the same as entering through Khujand or Khorog. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

With one exception, explained above: the rules for Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamirs), Afghan border in the Khatlon region are not the rules for the rest of Tajikistan.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Tajikistan

Tajikistan has five properties on the World Heritage List. Tajik National Park protects the Pamir mountains, and the tugai forests of the Tigrovaya Balka reserve are the other natural site. The cultural ones include Sarazm, one of the oldest sedentary settlements in Central Asia, from the fourth millennium BCE; the sites of ancient Khuttal, a medieval Silk Roads kingdom between the Panj and Vakhsh rivers; and the Zarafshan-Karakum corridor of the Silk Roads, shared with Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelling with caution: avoid border areas, especially with Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan, where there are landmines, and skip the Pamir Highway for now. It rates central Dushanbe as trouble-free and the rest of the country as medium risk.
