Vietnam rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for general entry. A yellow fever certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash above 5,000 USD (or the equivalent in another currency) or 15,000,000 VND must be declared at customs.
- Alcohol
- Duty-free on each entry: 1.5 litres of drinks of 20% alcohol or more, or 2 litres under 20%, or 3 litres of beer or other alcoholic drinks. Under-18s do not get this allowance.
- Tobacco
- Duty-free on each entry: 200 cigarettes, or 20 cigars, or 250 g of loose tobacco. Under-18s do not get this allowance.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying is an administrative offence penalised under Article 17 of Decree No. 167/2013/NĐ-CP of 12 November 2013. The procedure the Immigration Department itself sets out is that you must present yourself to it to settle the violation and extend your temporary residence before leaving the country: this is not something to leave for the airport desk on the day of the flight. The specific fine is not given here because the official source points to the regulation without reproducing the amount.
Grounds for refusal

- Presenting yourself at a border gate that is not among those designated by the Government for electronic visa use.
- Not carrying the printed e-visa alongside a valid passport: the Immigration Department requires both to be shown at the checkpoint.

Do you need a different visa for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang?
No. Vietnam sets the requirements, so entering through Hanoi asks for the same as entering through Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Vietnam
Vietnam runs north to south down a long, narrow strip. The north revolves around Hanoi (the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake) and Ha Long Bay, with its nearly two thousand limestone islets, a World Heritage site. The centre gathers Hue, the imperial capital of the Nguyen dynasty, and Hoi An, a trading port with more than a thousand preserved old buildings; both are World Heritage. The south is Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), energetic and contemporary, with the Mekong Delta and the Cu Chi tunnels nearby. Vietnam has 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Two weeks allow an unhurried end-to-end trip, linked by train or domestic flights. The climate varies sharply by region and season: there is no single ideal time for the whole country at once, but February to April is usually good in most of it.
