Crossing by boat to Cameroon from N'Djamena and sailing on Lake Chad are forbidden. Spain's Foreign Ministry recommends flying into N'Djamena, never parting with the passport, avoiding public transport, especially motorbike taxis, and travel on foot, and carrying spare water, fuel and oil on long journeys. Police checks on the roads are frequent.
