Entry requirements

Afghanistan visa requirements for Iraqi citizens

Iraqi citizens need a visa for Afghanistan and must apply for it before the trip at a consulate or embassy.

Verified practical details

You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:

Authorisation system

Visa in advance from the de facto authorities

A visa is required to enter, and it is not issued at the border. The de facto authorities set requirements that may change or not be made public, and a visa does not guarantee entry. The visa must still be valid on the day of departure: with an expired visa, travellers are prevented from leaving and fined. Some border crossings are closed permanently or temporarily.

Required documents

  • A visa obtained before travel, valid until the date of departure.
  • Polio vaccination certificate, which may be requested on departure from anyone who has stayed more than four weeks.

Transit rules

Drug trafficking and use are prohibited: with opium or heroin, sentences reach life imprisonment. The authorities prosecute alcohol consumption and control imports of alcohol and pork products. There is a high risk from mines and unexploded ordnance. Airports do not meet international security standards and Afghan airlines are on the EU air safety list. Spain's Foreign Ministry advises against entering by land.
