What you need to enter Senegal with an Italian passport

Fee

No visa fee for European Union passports (Spain included): the tourist visa was abolished on 1 May 2015 for stays of up to 90 days. Longer stays require a residence permit from the Directorate of the Police for Foreigners and Travel Documents (DPETV).

Required documents

• Passport valid for more than 6 months, with at least two blank pages.
• Onward or return ticket and proof of sufficient funds for the stay.

Vaccinations

• Yellow fever: the international vaccination certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months and older arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Arriving directly from Spain it is not required at the border, but Senegal is in the yellow fever endemic zone and vaccination is strongly recommended (some older WHO lists required it from all arrivals; check with a travel vaccination centre before traveling).
• Not an entry requirement, but worth knowing: malaria is present year-round throughout the country, and in September 2025 a Rift Valley fever outbreak was declared in northern Senegal.

Health insurance

Transit rules

Stay of up to 90 days without a visa for European Union passports. To stay longer than 3 months you must apply for a residence card at the Directorate of the Police for Foreigners and Travel Documents (DPETV) in Dakar.

Customs limits

Cash

Under UEMOA rules, you must declare in writing, on entering and leaving Senegal, amounts over 1,000,000 CFA francs (~€1,500). Currency can be exported without justification up to the equivalent of 500,000 CFA francs (~€750); above that figure you must present the entry currency declaration made at the arrival customs office together with the receipts for the exchange operations carried out in Senegal. The CFA franc / euro rate is fixed (€1 = 655.957 FCFA).

Alcohol

No official alcohol allowance published by Senegal's General Directorate of Customs (douanes.sn) was found — left without a figure rather than presenting a travel-industry number as official.

Tobacco

Same caveat as alcohol: no official Senegalese customs tobacco limit was found.

Overstay penalties

Anyone who stays beyond the authorized period without regularizing their situation before the Directorate of the Police for Foreigners and Travel Documents (DPETV) is in an irregular situation, at risk of a fine and of an expulsion order. A specific fine amount could not be confirmed against an official Senegalese source — the consequence is reported, not a figure.

Common reasons for denial

• Being unable to show you will leave: a return ticket, round-trip ticket or transport document to a destination outside Senegal is required, including of travellers entering under a visa exemption.
• Not presenting the international vaccination certificate: it is checked at every border to verify you comply with international health regulations.
• If you need a visa, holding a passport with less than 6 months of validity, or filing an incomplete application.
• If you intend to stay more than 3 months, not posting the repatriation bond that guarantees your return to your country of origin.
