Verified practical details

You can get your visa on arrival in Cape Verde, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:

Authorization system

EASE (mandatory pre-registration) + Visa

Every traveler, including those visa-exempt, must pre-register on the EASE portal up to 5 days before travel and pay the Airport Security Tax (TSA). As of January 1, 2026, Cape Verde stopped issuing visas on arrival for 96 nationalities, who must now apply for a visa before traveling (via embassy, consulate, or, "exceptionally" per the portal, at the border with a surcharge). Travelers who skip EASE pre-registration pay a higher regularization fee on arrival.

Fee

EUR 32.00

Airport Security Tax (TSA) paid during EASE pre-registration: CVE 3,400 (about €32) online for stays of up to 30 days; paying at the border police counter on arrival costs double. This tax applies to every traveler (visa-exempt or not); the consular visa itself, for the 96 nationalities that now need it before traveling, has an additional cost that hasn't been verified and varies by consulate.

Required documents

  • Valid passport
  • EASE pre-registration completed up to 5 days before travel, with the TSA paid
  • Visa approved before traveling (non-exempt nationalities, or those affected by the end of visa-on-arrival as of Jan 1, 2026)

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever, only if arriving from or having transited through a country with risk of transmission (International Health Regulations)

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Citizens of the European Union, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland are visa-exempt for up to 30 days, but must still complete EASE pre-registration before traveling. To stay beyond the authorized period, a conversion to a residence visa must be requested up to 15 days before the current visa expires.

Customs limits

Cash
Bringing in foreign currency has no limit but must be declared; taking it out is limited to the equivalent of CVE 20,000 or the amount declared on arrival, whichever is greater. Importing or exporting local currency (CVE) is prohibited.
Alcohol
There is no specific litre allowance published by the Directorate-General of Customs: alcohol for personal use falls within the general baggage regime, exempt up to a value of CVE 15,000. Prohibited for under-17s.
Tobacco
The official passenger portal (aac.cv) states 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 g of tobacco per traveller over 17; the Directorate-General of Customs website only details the general value-based regime (CVE 15,000).

Overstay penalties

Staying beyond the time authorized by the visa is grounds for administrative expulsion, per the Agência para a Integração de Imigrantes (AAI). No official source with the amount of any associated fine has been located.

Common reasons for denial

  • Not cumulatively meeting the legal entry requirements: the required documentation, a valid visa appropriate to the purpose of travel, sufficient means of subsistence, and not being subject to an express entry ban.
  • Constituting a danger or serious threat to public order, security or public health.
  • Being under 16 and travelling without the person exercising parental authority, unless you present that person’s written authorisation with the signature certified by a notary or by Cape Verde’s consular services, and there is someone in the country responsible for your stay.
  • Being a minor whose holder of parental responsibility — or the person they are entrusted to — has not been admitted to Cape Verde: save in duly justified exceptional cases, the minor is not authorised to enter either.
  • Since 1 January 2026, being a national of one of the countries that now need a prior visa: without it, entry is refused, and so are transit and airport stopovers.
