Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Luxembourg, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
None operational yet (ETIAS delayed)
Luxembourg is part of the Schengen area and of the future European ETIAS system, the travel authorisation for nationalities exempt from a Schengen visa. As of the verification date ETIAS is not operational and no applications are being taken; the EU will announce the start date several months in advance. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is already running: at the external border, travellers from outside the EU have their fingerprints and photo taken, free of charge and with nothing to do beforehand, and passport stamps are phased out. The country's only external border is the airport: anyone arriving by road or rail from France, Belgium or Germany has already been checked in another Schengen State. Citizens of the EU, and also of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Switzerland, enter with their national ID card.
Required documents
- Passport issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen area (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(a)). EU and Schengen citizens enter with their national ID card.
- A Schengen visa if your nationality requires one, unless you hold a residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Accommodation booking or letter of invitation, and a return or onward ticket (Art. 6(1)(c) and Annex I).
- Financial means: Luxembourg uses the minimum wage of an unskilled worker, prorated by day, as its reference, about 67 euros per day of stay according to the figure in Annex 25 (calculated on the 2018 minimum wage). A statement of financial liability endorsed by the Passport, Visa and Legalisation Office counts as proof.
Health insurance
Not mandatory for this visa-exempt entry, though it's strongly recommended.

Schengen rule: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole area, adding up days in any Schengen State. There are no checks on the borders with France, Belgium and Germany, but your passport or ID card must be valid on both entry and exit. Cash from 10,000 euros must also be declared when only transiting through the airport.
