Tunisia visa requirements for Sri Lankan citizens

Fee

There is no visa fee for a Spanish passport: the exemption covers stays of less than 90 days. The waiver of the entry and residence visa for three months is set out in Article 7 of Law 68-7 of 8 March 1968 on the condition of foreigners in Tunisia, for nationals of States that have signed an agreement abolishing that formality.

Required documents

• Passport valid for at least three months beyond the planned date of departure from the country. A national ID card alone is not accepted for entry into Tunisia.
• Arriving by sea (ferry, cruise call with disembarkation), non-residents must show a paid hotel booking and a return ticket at the port.
• Entry and exit may only take place through the border posts designated by order of the Ministry of the Interior (Article 4 of Law 68-7).

Vaccinations

• No vaccinations are required to enter Tunisia from Spain. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs nonetheless advises checking with an international vaccination centre before travelling.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Stay of up to three months without a visa on a Spanish passport. Anyone staying more than three consecutive months — or more than six non-consecutive months in a year — must obtain a visa and a temporary residence card (Article 9 of Law 68-7). Transit is expressly visa-exempt in two cases under Article 7: passengers who remain on board a ship calling at a Tunisian port without disembarking, and passengers in air transit who do not leave the airport during the stopover.

Customs limits

Cash

The Tunisian dinar is not convertible and both its import and its export are prohibited (it appears on Tunisian customs' list of goods banned on entry and on exit). Euros may be brought in, but amounts whose counter-value exceeds 5,000 dinars must be expressly declared; customs offers an online currency declaration service. Keep the receipts of any exchange operations carried out in Tunisia to justify taking currency out.

Alcohol

Allowance published by Tunisian Customs: 2 litres of drinks below 25% ABV and 1 litre of drinks above 25% ABV.

Tobacco

Allowance published by Tunisian Customs: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 500 grams of tombac.

Overstay penalties

Article 23 of Law 68-7 punishes with one month to one year in prison and a fine of 6 to 120 dinars any foreigner who enters or leaves Tunisia without complying with Articles 4 and 5, and anyone who fails to apply for a residence visa within the legal deadline. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs sums up the practical consequence: illegal stay in Tunisia is punished with penalties ranging from fines to six months in prison, and overstaying the 90 days causes delays and problems on leaving the country. An administrative penalty of 20 dinars per week of overstay, collected in cash by the Border Police on departure, is widely reported but could not be confirmed against an official Tunisian text: we do not present it as established.

Common reasons for denial

• Turning up with only a national ID card: the Spanish DNI is not valid for entering Tunisia, a passport is required.
• A passport with less than three months' validity from the planned date of departure.
• Arriving by sea as a non-resident without a paid hotel booking and a return ticket.
• Trying to enter or leave through a point that is not an authorized border post (Article 4 of Law 68-7).
• Having been subject to expulsion, to a refusal of a residence permit or to a ban on residing in Tunisia during a previous stay: Article 7 expressly excludes these people from the visa exemption.
