What we've verified for Angola

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Angola, updated 3 September 2026: tourist visa exemption under Presidential Decree 189/23, visa for other purposes, return ticket, extension up to 90 days, USD 150 daily fine, vaccinations, currency declaration, Africa CDC Ebola alert); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/angola (UK Government: 15,000 kwanza daily fine, currency and kwanza export limits, wrong visa); sme.gov.ao (Migration and Foreigners Service, official portal); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Angola rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from all travellers over one year of age, wherever they arrive from. Angola is also a risk area, so the certificate will be needed for some onward travel, such as to South Africa.
  • Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also recommends vaccination against hepatitis, tetanus, typhoid, polio and meningitis C.

Customs limits

Cash
Any amount from 5,000 US dollars (10,000 for residents) or its equivalent must be declared on entry and exit, and on entry the declaration is made within 24 hours at an institution authorised to operate in the foreign exchange market. You cannot take out more than 5,000 dollars in foreign currency or more than 50,000 kwanzas in cash: any excess can be seized, and travellers may be searched at the airport.

Overstay penalties

Each day beyond the permitted stay is fined, in kwanzas. The two official sources disagree on the amount: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives the equivalent of 150 US dollars per day, and the UK Government 15,000 kwanzas per day. Arrest is also possible, you may not be allowed to leave until the fine is paid, and re-entry can be refused.

Grounds for refusal

  • Travelling to work, study or do business without a visa, or with a visa that does not match the purpose.
  • Not having a return ticket: many airlines refuse boarding.
  • A passport valid for less than six months.
  • Not having a yellow fever certificate.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Luanda, Huambo, or Lobito?

No. Angola sets the requirements, so entering through Luanda asks for the same as entering through Huambo or Lobito. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Angola

Angola has had one property on the World Heritage List since 2017: the vestiges of Mbanza Kongo, political and spiritual capital of the former Kingdom of Kongo between the 14th and 19th centuries, on a plateau 570 metres above sea level. For travellers from Spain, entry has been simple since 2023, as tourist stays of up to 30 days need no visa. Getting around needs more care. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends extreme caution because of a rise in assaults on foreigners, especially in Luanda and in broad daylight too, avoiding travel on foot where possible and carrying certified copies of your documents. It also advises carrying cash, as cash machines do not always have money and it recommends against using street ATMs, and insurance that covers air evacuation.
