Antigua and Barbuda rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of those countries.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Up to 10,000 US dollars is allowed at the border; larger amounts must be declared.
- Alcohol
- 1 litre of wine or spirits, duty-free. Everything obtained outside the country and carried in your luggage must be declared to customs.
- Tobacco
- 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco, duty-free.
Overstay penalties
Exceeding the authorised stay and working without a work permit are offences, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The amount of the penalties could not be confirmed against the law of Antigua and Barbuda.
Grounds for refusal
- No return or onward ticket.
- Being unable to show accommodation or sufficient funds.
- A passport with less than six months' validity or no blank page.
- Minors without the required parental consent.
- Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for St. John’s, English Harbour, or Codrington?
No. Antigua and Barbuda sets the requirements, so entering through St. John’s asks for the same as entering through English Harbour or Codrington. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda has one property on the World Heritage List, inscribed in 2016: the Antigua Naval Dockyard and related archaeological sites, a Georgian-era walled compound that the British Royal Navy built in the late 18th century with enslaved African labour, in a bay sheltered from hurricanes. The rest of the trip usually revolves around Antigua's beaches. The small island of Barbuda gets far fewer visitors, has little tourist infrastructure and often deserted beaches. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags no areas to avoid, apart from caution in the suburbs of St. John's, and advises not walking alone at night on the beach or in isolated places, using only licensed taxis and agreeing the fare first, since they have no meters.
