Bahamas rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, except Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago but including Sao Tome and Principe, Somalia and Tanzania, and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of those countries.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Money above 10,000 dollars must be declared to customs, and no more than 200 Bahamian dollars may be taken out of the country, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Alcohol
- For adults: one quart (just under a litre) of spirits and one quart of wine, duty-free. Visitors also have a 100-dollar exemption on any dutiable article; anything above that pays duties and taxes.
- Tobacco
- For adults: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or one pound (about 450 grams) of tobacco.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying can lead to a fine, detention and deportation, according to the UK Government. The amount could not be confirmed against the Bahamian immigration law.
Grounds for refusal
- No return ticket or accommodation booking.
- A passport with less than six months' validity.
- Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
- Minors without the required parental consent.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Nassau, Freeport, or Marsh Harbour?
No. Bahamas sets the requirements, so entering through Nassau asks for the same as entering through Freeport or Marsh Harbour. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Bahamas
The Bahamas has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is an archipelago of hundreds of islands and cays east of Florida, and most trips revolve around the sea: shallow, very clear water, reefs, the Exuma cays and pink-sand beaches on Harbour Island and Eleuthera. Nassau, on New Providence, is where the cruise ships and big hotels are. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags no areas to avoid, but advises caution in the Over the Hill district, south of Shirley Street, and at Fish Fry (Arawak Cay) in Nassau, especially at night, and not walking alone on beaches or in isolated places. The hurricane season runs from June to November.
