Barbados rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, except Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of them.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash above 5,000 US dollars or the equivalent in another currency must be declared on entry, and travellers must have sufficient funds for the stay, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Alcohol
Each visitor may bring in one litre of alcoholic drink; anything above that is taxed. Fruit, vegetables, plants and seeds must be declared and inspected, and may be quarantined.

Overstay penalties

Overstaying or working without a permit is illegal, and the authorities can fine or detain offenders, according to the UK Government. The amount could not be confirmed against the Barbados immigration law.

Grounds for refusal

  • No onward or return ticket.
  • Not having completed the immigration and customs form.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
  • A passport reported lost or stolen.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Bridgetown, Speightstown, or Oistins?

No. Barbados sets the requirements, so entering through Bridgetown asks for the same as entering through Speightstown or Oistins. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Barbados

Barbados has one property on the World Heritage List: historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, inscribed in 2011, with its English colonial street plan and the 18th and 19th-century military buildings around the Garrison Savannah. Outside the capital, the west coast has calm beaches, facing the Caribbean, and the Atlantic shore in the east, at Bathsheba, is rougher. The island's rum, which claims to be one of the oldest in the world, is another of its trademarks. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends avoiding lonely beaches at night and choosing guarded ones, because thefts are frequent on the beaches near the capital. The hurricane season runs from June to November.
