Bosnia and Herzegovina rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry. Bosnia and Herzegovina does not ask any traveller for a yellow fever certificate, wherever they arrive from, according to the list the WHO publishes under the International Health Regulations.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash or securities worth more than 10,000 euros must be declared at every border crossing, on the currency declaration form available from officers or downloadable from uino.gov.ba. Carrying more than 10,000 euros also requires approval from the Ministry of Finance of Republika Srpska or of the Federation. The currency is the convertible mark (KM), at a fixed rate of 1.95583 to the euro.
- Alcohol
- Aged 17 and over, per person per day: 1 litre of drinks over 22% or 2 litres at 22% or under, plus 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer. Meat and milk products may only be brought in under the conditions set by the authority; others are destroyed at the border.
- Tobacco
- Aged 17 and over, per person per day: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, or a proportional combination.
Overstay penalties
Entering or leaving illegally, with invalid documents or with no documents is fined between 300 and 1,500 marks (150 to 750 euros), according to the Spanish Embassy. Anyone without an entry stamp can be fined by the Border Police on departure.
Grounds for refusal
- A document with less than 90 days' validity after the planned departure, or a damaged one.
- A document on the Interpol list as lost or stolen.
- Having exceeded 90 days in the previous six months.
- A minor travelling without the required notarised consent.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Sarajevo, Mostar, or Banja Luka?
No. Bosnia and Herzegovina sets the requirements, so entering through Sarajevo asks for the same as entering through Mostar or Banja Luka. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina has five properties on the World Heritage List. The Old Bridge area of Mostar, rebuilt after its destruction in 1993, and the 16th-century Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad are the best known. Vjetrenica Cave, in Ravno, was added in 2024 for its underground fauna, and the country shares the medieval stećci tombstones and the primeval beech forests with its neighbours. Sarajevo blends the Ottoman bazaar of Baščaršija with its Austro-Hungarian legacy. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against leaving main roads and paths in the countryside because some areas have still not been cleared of mines, including around Doboj, Teslić, Maglaj, Travnik and Ilijaš, and asks travellers to avoid Mount Trebević in Sarajevo because of muggings and the banks of the river Bosna because of flood risk.
