Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Authorisation system

Visa exemption up to 90 days in six months (no advance formality)

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of the Schengen area: days spent there do not count towards the Schengen 90 days, or vice versa. Border police check entry and exit stamps to make sure the permitted days have not been exceeded; without a stamp you can be fined on departure.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for more than 90 days after the planned departure and undamaged. Check before travelling that it is not on the Interpol list as stolen or lost: if it is, the Bosnian authorities will confiscate it.
  • Police registration on arrival. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for it within 24 hours for stays of two days or more, and the UK Government says 72 hours; the safe choice is the first day. Hotels do it for guests; in private accommodation the owner or the traveller does it.
  • Under-18s travelling alone, with an adult who is not their parent or with only one parent (especially with a different surname): a notarised letter of consent signed by the parent or guardian, naming the accompanying adult.

Transit rules

The borders with Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro are open. Croatia is in Schengen, so entering Croatia from Bosnia means entering the Schengen area, with its external border check. Winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 15 April, with a fine of 40 marks (about 20 euros).
