What we've verified for Brunei

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Brunei, updated 21 April 2026: six-month passport, caning and prison, 90-day visa waiver agreement, e-Arrival Card since 2024, yellow fever, safety); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/brunei (UK Government: undamaged passport, dual nationality, stamp, detention and caning, e-Arrival and health declaration, land border opening hours, polio, alcohol and the Customs.BN app); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice for Brunei: alcohol allowance for non-Muslims, which the Ministry takes from the customs section of the Brunei airport website; re-read on 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Brunei rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of them. The UK Government adds that polio vaccination is also required in some circumstances.

Customs limits

Alcohol
The sale of alcohol is banned in Brunei. Non-Muslim visitors over 17 may bring in, for personal consumption, 12 cans of beer and two bottles of spirits, about two litres, which must be declared in the Customs.BN app or on arrival at the airport. Trying to obtain alcohol any other way inside the country may be an offence.

Overstay penalties

Illegal entry, overstaying or an expired passport are punished with penalties ranging from caning to three months in prison, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the UK Government mentions detention and caning.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than six months' validity, damaged or with pages missing.
  • Not having completed the electronic arrival card.
  • Holding Bruneian nationality and travelling on another passport.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Bandar Seri Begawan, Kuala Belait, or Seria?

No. Brunei sets the requirements, so entering through Bandar Seri Begawan asks for the same as entering through Kuala Belait or Seria. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Brunei

Brunei has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is a small sultanate on the north coast of Borneo, and what visitors see is the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, with the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien mosque and Kampong Ayer, a village of stilt houses on the Brunei River, and the jungle: Ulu Temburong National Park, reached by longboat, protects primary rainforest. It is a Muslim country with strict rules, and the sale of alcohol is banned. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes it as safe, with no risk of instability and very little crime, and only advises against travelling alone at night in rural areas because of the dangerous jungle wildlife.
