What we've verified for Cambodia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: evisa.gov.kh (official portal of Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation: USD 30 fee for the type T visa, 3 business days' processing, validity and stay, ports accepting the electronic visa, compulsory e-Arrival); customs.gov.kh (General Department of Customs and Excise, web.archive.org copies of its pages "Goods or personal effect of passenger", Letter No. 773 of 2015: alcohol, tobacco and perfume allowances and minimum age, and "Import and export of foreign currencies", Prakas No. 013 of 1998: currency declaration and export); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Cambodia: ways to get the visa, passport validity, extension, fine, detention and expulsion, riels, risk areas); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/cambodia/entry-requirements (UK Government: damaged passports, departure card, uncapped fine, FPCS registration); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List). Checked on 23 September 2026; customs allowances and currency (checked 29 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Cambodia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, and from those who have had layovers of more than 12 hours at airports in those countries.
  • Cambodia has a high prevalence of dengue, malaria in rural and forest areas, and endemic rabies: it is worth consulting an international vaccination centre before travelling.

Customs limits

Cash
There is no limit on bringing in foreign currency, but anyone entering with 10,000 US dollars or more (or the equivalent) must declare it to customs and keep the declaration to show on departure. Taking out more than 10,000 US dollars, or more than was declared on entry, requires a permit from the National Bank of Cambodia. Entering or leaving the country with riels, which are not convertible, is prohibited.
Alcohol
Up to 2 litres of any alcoholic drink, under Letter No. 773 of the General Department of Customs and Excise (5 June 2015). Under-18s have no allowance.
Tobacco
Up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco, under the same rule. Under-18s have no allowance here either. Also up to 350 millilitres of perfume and cosmetics.

Overstay penalties

Anyone who exceeds the permitted stay pays a fine that depends on the number of days over, and immigration may also order their detention and expulsion. According to the UK Government, the fine has no upper limit, and anyone who overstays by more than 30 days will have to leave Cambodia and pay it. We have not been able to confirm the daily amount against an official Cambodian text.

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

  • A passport with less than six months' validity, damaged or with pages missing.
  • Entering on a tourist visa to work: a business visa and a work permit are required, and the authorities enforce this closely.

Apply to: Visa on arrival

  • A passport with less than six months' validity, damaged or with pages missing.
  • Presenting the electronic visa at a border post that does not accept it: it is only valid at three airports and two land crossings.
  • Not carrying an onward ticket when the airline asks for one before boarding a flight on which you plan to get a visa on arrival.
  • Entering on a tourist visa to work: a business visa and a work permit are required, and the authorities enforce this closely.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Sihanoukville?

No. Cambodia sets the requirements, so entering through Phnom Penh asks for the same as entering through Siem Reap or Sihanoukville. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Cambodia

Almost everyone goes to Cambodia for Angkor, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992: the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century, with Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Bayon spread across an archaeological park visited from Siem Reap with tickets sold by the state company Angkor Enterprise. Also on the list are Sambor Prei Kuk (2017), in Kampong Thom province, is the pre-Angkorian city of brick temples, and Koh Ker (2023) was briefly the capital of the empire and is now surrounded by jungle. In 2025 the Cambodian Memorial Sites were added to the list, former Khmer Rouge centres of repression such as Tuol Sleng prison and the Choeung Ek killing field in Phnom Penh. The temple of Preah Vihear, also a World Heritage site, is off every route: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against travel to the whole border with Thailand because of the armed clashes, with crossings closed and mined areas. Elsewhere it asks travellers to stick to marked paths and to take extra care in Sihanoukville and on the coast.
