Cameroon rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from all travellers over one year of age, wherever they arrive from.
- Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also recommends vaccination against tetanus, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, diphtheria and meningitis.
Overstay penalties
Staying in Cameroon on an expired visa is an offence under Cameroonian law. The tourist visa is only extended for force majeure, reasoned and justified before the Border Police.
Grounds for refusal
- Travelling with the application sent but without an approved authorisation.
- Arriving with just a letter of invitation instead of the visa.
- Arriving overland or by sea expecting an e-visa, which is only valid at airports.
- Not carrying a yellow fever certificate.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Yaoundé, Douala, or Garoua?
No. Cameroon sets the requirements, so entering through Yaoundé asks for the same as entering through Douala or Garoua. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Cameroon
Cameroon has three properties on the World Heritage List. Two are rainforest: the Dja Faunal Reserve, inscribed in 1987, and the Sangha Trinational (2012), shared with Congo and the Central African Republic. The third, added in 2025, is the Diy-Gid-Biy cultural landscape in the Mandara Mountains: sixteen dry-stone archaeological sites spread over seven villages in the Far North region, which is one of the areas to avoid. Read the advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before planning anything: it recommends travelling with extreme caution, advises against all travel to the English-speaking North-West and South-West regions, and asks travellers to stay away from the Far North and from the border strips with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic because of armed groups. It also reminds travellers to carry the passport with the visa at all times and to cooperate with security checks, which have multiplied.
