Which passport do you hold?

We'll take you straight to the entry requirements for Chile for your nationality.

What we've verified for Chile

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2026-08-22). The specifics depend on your nationality — open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: serviciomigraciones.cl (SERMIG — tourist Permanencia Transitoria, 90-day period, extendable; official fine table by infraction/tier in the "Sanctions and fines" section); pdichile.cl (Investigations Police — Tarjeta Única Migratoria and its duplicate); aduana.cl (National Customs Service — traveler's allowance: 400 cigarettes/50 cigars/500g pipe tobacco/2,500cc of alcohol, and the USD 10,000 cash declaration threshold); travelcodex.com and cascada.travel (elimination of the reciprocity fee for the US in 2014 and for Australia in September 2025 — travel-industry secondary sources, no easily accessible official Chilean announcement confirms the exact date, but both sources agree) (checked 22 August 2026).

Chile applies a nationality-based entry regime: most American and European passports enter visa-free for tourism, with stay limits that vary by country of origin, while other nationalities need a prior consular visa. On entry, the Investigations Police (PDI) issues a Tourism Card that must be kept for the whole stay — it's the record of your entry date and authorized length of stay, and a duplicate can be requested if lost.

Passport validity

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Rapa Nui (Easter Island): what changes

To enter Rapa Nui you fill in the Ministry of the Interior's single entry form and present it at the Investigations Police checkpoint, along with your return ticket and an accommodation booking or an invitation from a resident. The maximum stay is thirty calendar days, for foreign visitors and for non-Rapa Nui Chileans alike. People registered with CONADI as members of the Rapa Nui people do not fill in the form and only show identification.

Do you need a different visa for Santiago, Valparaiso, or Concepcion?

No. Chile sets the requirements, so entering through Santiago asks for the same as entering through Valparaiso or Concepcion. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

With one exception, explained above: the rules for Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are not the rules for the rest of Chile.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Chile

Chile is a very long ribbon between the Andes and the Pacific, and the trip is done by extremes with domestic flights. Santiago and the nearby wine valleys are the base. To the north, the Atacama Desert — the driest in the world — gathers salt flats with flamingos, geysers, high-altitude lagoons and some of the best skies on the planet for stargazing. To the south, Patagonia and Torres del Paine National Park, with its granite towers, is one of the great trekking destinations. And 3,700 km off the coast, Easter Island (Rapa Nui), a World Heritage site, with its moai. Chile has 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Two weeks cover Atacama, Santiago and some of Patagonia. Being in the southern hemisphere, Patagonia is visited in the austral summer (November-March); the Atacama and the north are good almost year-round.
