Entry requirements

Chile visa requirements for Chinese citizens

Chinese citizens need a visa for Chile and must apply for it before the trip at a consulate or embassy.

Consular fee
Free
Minimum passport validity
No minimum: it just has to be valid

How this visa is processed

Online form at tramites.minrel.gov.cl and submission of original documents at the Chilean consulate (Embassy in Beijing or consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu)

A holder of an ordinary Chinese passport needs a visa for Chile, and the tourist visa is free: Chile and China agreed in 2015 to stop charging each other for tourist visas. It can be single or multiple entry. The form is completed online on the Chilean Foreign Ministry's services portal and the documents are submitted at the consulate complete and in original, because incomplete files are returned. For tourism, the Beijing consulate asks for a passport valid for six months, an invitation letter signed before a notary in Chile by the host, a notarised employment or study certificate translated into Spanish or English, a bank certificate for at least 50,000 yuan, a return flight booking, a hotel booking and an itinerary. Family visits also need a kinship certificate legalised by the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chilean Embassy. Diplomatic and service passports are exempt, for up to 30 days. Besides the Embassy in Beijing, Chile has consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.

Verified practical details

You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:

Rapa Nui (Easter Island): different entry rules

To enter Rapa Nui you fill in the Ministry of the Interior's single entry form and present it at the Investigations Police checkpoint, along with your return ticket and an accommodation booking or an invitation from a resident. The maximum stay is thirty calendar days, for foreign visitors and for non-Rapa Nui Chileans alike. People registered with CONADI as members of the Rapa Nui people do not fill in the form and only show identification.

Authorisation system

Chile does not require any electronic pre-authorisation (ETA or similar) for the passports we track; tourist entry is resolved directly at passport control, where the Investigations Police (PDI) issues the Tarjeta Única Migratoria. The old "reciprocity fee" charged on arrival to some nationalities no longer appears among the National Migration Service's entry requirements. In Australia's case, Chile's embassy there announced that the USD 117 charge would stop applying on 16 December 2019.

Fee

Free

Amount published by the consular post that handles this corridor; the country page may give another consulate's figure.

Required documents

  • A valid passport. Nationals of Mercosur countries and Bolivia may enter on their national ID card, without a passport, under the applicable agreement
  • Tourist entry runs on the Permiso de Permanencia Transitoria: it allows up to 90 days, extendable once by a further 90, and can never run beyond the expiry of your passport

How much money you need to show

Chile sets no figure. The National Migration Service asks you to show sufficient means for your stay and leaves the check to the border officer, so it is worth carrying proof.
