What draws travelers to El Salvador

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and can be covered quickly, with volcanoes, coffee and one of the best surf coasts on the Pacific. Joya de Cerén, its only World Heritage site (1993), is a Maya farming village buried by ash from an eruption around AD 600 and preserved almost intact — utensils, crops, even half-finished meals — earning it the nickname "Pompeii of the Americas"; it is visited together with the nearby ruins of San Andrés and Tazumal. The Ruta de las Flores links coffee-mountain towns (Juayúa, Apaneca, Ataco) with weekend food markets. The Santa Ana volcano (Ilamatepec) and Lake Coatepeque, in its crater, are the most common nature trip from the capital. The coast — El Tunco, El Zonte, Punta Roca — has long right-hand point breaks that are recognized internationally. El Salvador has 1 UNESCO World Heritage site. Since March 2022 a state of exception has been in force, renewed month by month (the 52nd extension by mid-2026), which has sharply reduced homicides but which expands police powers and suspends some guarantees; Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises traveling with caution and checking security conditions before the trip.
