Verified practical details

You'll need to apply for an e-visa before your trip. Here are the verified details:

Fee

USD 12.00

A US$12 tourist card, paid in cash and in dollars on arrival (airport, land or sea crossings), allowing a stay of up to 90 days. Most sources consulted place Spain in the group of nationalities that buys this card on arrival (rather than the fully visa-exempt group); this could not be confirmed against the General Directorate of Migration's official country-group list. There is no consular visa fee for Spain because no visa is required.

Required documents

  • Valid passport in good condition (a minimum of 6 months' validity from the date of entry is recommended).
  • Payment of the tourist card (US$12) on arrival, unless the nationality is in the fully visa-exempt group.
  • Return or onward ticket.
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay.
  • Regional Traveler's Sworn Declaration, electronic and mandatory (the same Central American regional form as Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize and the Dominican Republic).
  • Check that the immigration officer stamps your passport on entry.

Vaccinations

  • No mandatory vaccines for entry from Spain: the international yellow fever vaccination certificate is only required from travelers arriving from a country El Salvador considers endemic.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Stay of up to 90 days, shared with the rest of the CA-4 bloc (Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua): the count doesn't reset when crossing from El Salvador into any of those three countries. One extension can be requested per year. Important: this is only an internal mobility regime — each CA-4 country sets its own entry visa policy for third countries. Nicaragua unilaterally tightened its own in February 2026; this doesn't change anything about entering El Salvador, but it can affect anyone planning to cross into Nicaragua within the same trip.

Customs limits

Cash
Declare on the Regional Traveler's Sworn Declaration (and, where applicable, on Form UIF 01-5) if entering or leaving with US$10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency (or more). The US dollar is the official currency; bitcoin ceased to be legal tender in January 2025 (a reform agreed with the IMF) and its use is now voluntary.
Alcohol
The General Directorate of Customs sets a traveler's baggage allowance of US$500 in value for new goods (after at least 72 hours outside the country), but expressly excludes alcohol and tobacco from the family group declaration without quantifying a permitted amount — no official figure for liters of alcohol could be obtained.
Tobacco
Same caveat as alcohol: the US$500 General Directorate of Customs allowance does not cover tobacco and no official cigarette limit was found.

Overstay penalties

The Migration Act treats anyone who stays in the country beyond the authorized period as being in an irregular situation; the consequence is an administrative fine and possible deportation, plus having to regularize departure before the General Directorate of Migration. A specific current amount could not be confirmed against the official text of the law or against a published DGME fee schedule — the consequence is reported, not a figure.

Common reasons for denial

  • Presenting a passport that is not valid or not in good condition: the manual requires this expressly of third-country nationals.
  • Not naming the person or institution vouching for your financial solvency to stay as a tourist.
  • Arriving on a consulted visa out of time: its validity for entering the region is 60 days from the date of issue.
  • What to accept before flying: holding a granted visa does NOT guarantee admission. The final decision is taken by the migration officer at the port of entry, and the manual says so itself.
