Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Gabon, updated 1 June 2026: embassy visa or e-Visa with entry authorisation, fee in Libreville, accommodation, yellow fever, customs, photography, security); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/gabon (UK Government: visa required, hotel booking); evisa.dgdi.ga (official e-Visa portal); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. Gabon rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: required for travellers over nine months of age, and the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before arrival.

Customs limits

Cash
The currency is the Central African CFA franc, at a fixed rate to the euro (1 euro = 655.957 CFA francs).
Alcohol
3 litres of wine and 4 one-litre bottles of spirits. Above that, goods must be declared and duty paid (article 172 of the Customs Code).
Tobacco
400 cigarettes (two cartons), 125 cigars and 500 grams of tobacco.

Overstay penalties

The penalty for staying longer than authorised could not be confirmed against an official Gabonese source. Spain's Foreign Ministry warns that irregular entry is punished with expulsion, ordered by the Ministry of the Interior.

Grounds for refusal

  • Travelling with the e-Visa application receipt instead of the entry authorisation.
  • Not carrying the yellow fever vaccination certificate.
  • Being unable to show accommodation for the whole stay.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Libreville, Port-Gentil, or Franceville?

No. Gabon sets the requirements, so entering through Libreville asks for the same as entering through Port-Gentil or Franceville. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Gabon

Gabon has two properties on the World Heritage List. The Ecosystem and Relict Cultural Landscape of Lopé-Okanda, inscribed in 2007, joins rainforest and an ancient savannah with endangered large mammals, and keeps traces of very old human settlement. Ivindo National Park, inscribed in 2021, covers almost 300,000 hectares of the north, crossed by blackwater rivers with rapids and waterfalls. Spain's Foreign Ministry asks for caution: central Libreville is reasonably safe by day, but it advises against walking after sunset anywhere in the country and against bus stations, markets and working-class districts.
