Guyana rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, except Argentina, Paraguay, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Guyana is itself a risk area and vaccination is recommended for travellers going there.
Customs limits
- Cash
- A free administrative declaration is required when entering or leaving with more than 5,000 US dollars in any currency or form of payment.
Overstay penalties
Anyone who overstays or abuses the conditions of their stay can be arrested and sentenced to one year in prison, a fine of up to 50,000 Guyana dollars (about 250 US dollars) and deportation at their own expense on release, according to the UK Government and the Spanish Embassy.
Grounds for refusal
- No return ticket.
- A passport with less than six months' validity or reported lost or stolen.
- Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
- Having overstayed on a previous visit.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Georgetown, Linden, or New Amsterdam?
No. Guyana sets the requirements, so entering through Georgetown asks for the same as entering through Linden or New Amsterdam. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Guyana
Guyana has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is the only South American country with English as its official language and is mostly covered by rainforest. Most visitors head for Kaieteur Falls, a very high single-drop waterfall in the middle of the forest, reached by light aircraft from Georgetown, and the Rupununi savannah in the south, with its ranches and wildlife. Georgetown keeps colonial timber buildings such as St George's Cathedral. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks travellers not to go out at night in risk areas and to avoid the Buxton and Lusignan area, between Georgetown and New Amsterdam, and Bartica, in the interior, where armed gangs operate. The most serious natural hazards are floods and landslides.
