What draws travelers to Jordan

Jordan is a small country with a hard-to-match density of landmarks and, above all, with Petra, the Nabataean capital carved into the pink rock at the end of the Siq gorge, a World Heritage site since 1985 and one of those visits that survives the expectations. The same year saw Quseir Amra join the list, an Umayyad desert lodge with 8th-century secular frescoes — baths, hunting scenes, nudes — unusual in early Islamic art. The Wadi Rum desert, a mixed site since 2011, is the other big draw: red sandstone, 12,000-year-old petroglyphs and Bedouin camps; it has stood in for Mars in half a dozen films. To these add Um er-Rasas, with its Byzantine mosaics (2004); Al-Maghtas, the site of Jesus's baptism on the east bank of the Jordan (2015); As-Salt, the Ottoman town of yellow limestone recognized in 2021 for its tradition of urban hospitality; Umm al-Jimal, the black basalt town (2024); and the Aqaba Marine Reserve, inscribed in 2026 as the country's first natural site: eight in all. Off the list, Jerash preserves one of the best-kept Roman cities in the Mediterranean, and the Dead Sea, 430 metres below sea level, keeps receding year after year.
