Jordan rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
- Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends the polio vaccine.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash must be declared from 5,000 US dollars upwards.
- Alcohol
- A maximum of two bottles of alcoholic drinks per person.
- Tobacco
- No official tobacco allowance published by Jordan's Customs Department on a citable page was found (the portal serves the traveller exemptions section in Arabic only and redirects to the home page): the field is left without a figure rather than presenting a travel-industry number as official. What is confirmed is the ban on exporting antiquities and archaeological remains.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying the visa causes delays on departure and a fine set by the border authorities according to how long the overstay lasted. The way to avoid it is to request the extension at a police station before the 30 days run out. A rate of 1.5 dinars per day of overstay is widely quoted: doubled since July 2025 for certain residence-card holders: but we could not confirm it against an official Jordanian source and do not present it as being in force.

- Carrying antiquities or archaeological remains, whose export is banned (it affects departure rather than entry, but it is the country's most common customs incident).
Apply to: Visa on arrival
- A passport with less than six months' validity at the time of entry.
- Being unable to pay the 40-dinar visa fee on arrival and not holding a valid Jordan Pass bought before travelling.
- Presenting a Jordan Pass bought once already in Jordan or for a stay of fewer than three nights: in that case it does not waive the visa fee.
- Carrying antiquities or archaeological remains, whose export is banned (it affects departure rather than entry, but it is the country's most common customs incident).
Do you need a different visa for Amman, Aqaba, or Irbid?
No. Jordan sets the requirements, so entering through Amman asks for the same as entering through Aqaba or Irbid. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Jordan
Jordan is a small country with a hard-to-match density of landmarks and, above all, with Petra, the Nabataean capital carved into the pink rock at the end of the Siq gorge, a World Heritage site since 1985 and one of those visits that survives the expectations. The same year saw Quseir Amra join the list, an Umayyad desert lodge with 8th-century secular frescoes (baths, hunting scenes, nudes) unusual in early Islamic art. The Wadi Rum desert, a mixed site since 2011, is the other big draw: red sandstone, 12,000-year-old petroglyphs and Bedouin camps; it has stood in for Mars in half a dozen films. To these add Um er-Rasas, with its Byzantine mosaics (2004); Al-Maghtas, the site of Jesus's baptism on the east bank of the Jordan (2015); As-Salt, the Ottoman town of yellow limestone recognised in 2021 for its tradition of urban hospitality; Umm al-Jimal, the black basalt town (2024); and the Aqaba Marine Reserve, inscribed in 2026 as the country's first natural site: eight in all. Off the list, Jerash preserves one of the best-kept Roman cities in the Mediterranean, and the Dead Sea, 430 metres below sea level, keeps receding year after year.
