Which passport do you hold?

We'll take you straight to the entry requirements for Kazakhstan for your nationality.

What we've verified for Kazakhstan

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Kazakhstan: 30-day exemption and the 90-in-180 rule, passport, registration, immigration card, exclusion zones, Baikonur, penalties for illegal stay, currency); kgd.gov.kz (State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance, "Information for passengers traveling through the Kazakhstan section of the customs border of the Eurasian Economic Union": allowances and the 10,000-dollar threshold); gov.kz (Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement, published by the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Thailand, "Kazakhstan Launches the QazETA Digital Platform for Foreign Nationals in Pilot Mode": pilot phase, who it covers, the 72-hour deadline, 180-day validity and its voluntary status during the pilot); vmp.gov.kz (visa and migration portal); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kazakhstan/entry-requirements (UK Government: 30-day validity, registration by the hotel, customs union, currency export); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List); eec.eaeunion.org (Annex 1 to Eurasian Economic Commission Council Decision No. 107, as amended on 18 October 2024: minimum age of 21 for tobacco when entering Kazakhstan). Checked on 23 September 2026, except the QazETA announcement (29 September 2026) and the tobacco minimum age (30 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Kazakhstan rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller. Grounds for refusal depend on how you enter.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
  • Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends vaccination against hepatitis A and B and tetanus.

Customs limits

Cash
Amounts equal to or below the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars do not have to be declared. Above that, when entering or leaving for a country outside the Customs Union, the amount is declared on the passenger form; undeclared money may be confiscated and fined. According to the UK Government, no more than 10,000 dollars in foreign currency cash may be taken out: any declared excess can only leave in tenge. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that these rules are enforced strictly and breaking them can mean having your passport held for more than a week.
Alcohol
Allowance published by the State Revenue Committee for the Eurasian Economic Union customs border: up to 3 litres of alcoholic drinks and beer.
Tobacco
From the same source: 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or cigarillos, or 250 grams of tobacco, or a combination not exceeding 250 grams. When entering Kazakhstan this allowance only applies to those aged 21 or over (18 elsewhere in the Union), under Annex 1 to Eurasian Economic Commission Council Decision No. 107.

Overstay penalties

Illegal entry or stay opens penalty proceedings that, until resolved, can prevent you from leaving the country; with an expired visa they can last up to a month. The penalty can reach ten days in prison, a fine and a five-year ban on returning. Since 2016 an overstay of up to 48 hours is punished only with a verbal warning, although the procedure usually costs you your flight. Registration failures, even when beyond the traveller's control, can also block departure and bring heavy fines.

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

  • Exceeding 90 days in 180 by chaining visa-free stays.
  • Travelling for business or work without the matching visa: the exemption only covers tourism.
  • A passport without enough validity or reported lost or stolen.
  • Arriving without the QazETA authorisation once it becomes mandatory; until then it runs as a pilot.

Apply to: e-Visa

  • Exceeding 90 days in 180 by chaining visa-free stays.
  • Travelling for business or work without the matching visa: the exemption only covers tourism.
  • A passport without enough validity or reported lost or stolen.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Almaty, Astana, or Shymkent?

No. Kazakhstan sets the requirements, so entering through Almaty asks for the same as entering through Astana or Shymkent. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is mostly steppe, with two very different cities at either end: Almaty, at the foot of the Tien Shan mountains, and Astana, the capital built almost from scratch in the north. Much of what draws visitors is on the World Heritage List. In Turkistan, the 14th-century Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi (2003) is one of the great buildings of the Timurid era; near Almaty, the Tamgaly petroglyphs (2004) gather thousands of Bronze Age carvings; and the country shares with China and Kyrgyzstan the Silk Road stretch of the Chang'an-Tianshan corridor (2014). The natural sites on the list are Saryarka (2008), the northern steppes and lakes where migratory birds stop over, the Western Tien-Shan (2016), the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan (2023) and, since 2026, the rock mosques of Mangystau, by the Caspian. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly advises against trying to visit the Baikonur cosmodrome, under Russian administration and requiring a Roscosmos permit, and points out that approaching any border away from the transit roads requires authorisation.
