Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Kazakhstan, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
QazETA (electronic travel authorisation, pilot phase)
Kazakhstan has launched QazETA in a pilot phase, an electronic authorisation for citizens of visa-exempt countries that is requested through a mobile app at least 72 hours before travel and is valid for 180 days. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is recommended but not mandatory during the pilot; it will then be required gradually, with no official date published yet.
Apply on the official site →Fee
The electronic visa for nationalities that need one is processed on the vmp.gov.kz visa and migration portal, but its current fee could not be confirmed against an official source.
Required documents
- Passport valid for the whole stay. The Spanish Embassy recommends at least three months from entry; the UK Government asks for 30 days and one blank page.
- Visa-free stays of up to 30 consecutive days and no more than 90 in 180. Longer stays, or business or work trips, require a visa.
- For stays of up to 30 days the traveller has no migration formalities to complete: the hotel or host reports the arrival. Anyone entering through a crossing other than an international airport would do well to report to the local Immigration office within three days, as the rules are not applied the same way across the country.
- Carry prescriptions for all medicines: at the land border with Uzbekistan, tourists carrying first-aid kits without prescriptions have had their passports held.
Health insurance
Not mandatory for this destination.
When travel insurance is mandatory → Travel insurance policies ↓Transit rules
Since 10 January 2020 there is no immigration card to fill in on entry, though some border posts may still ask for one; if it is handed out, keep it until departure. Waits at the land crossings with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan can last hours, and Uzbek posts sometimes close without notice. The whole 25-kilometre border strip outside the transit roads is an exclusion zone requiring an access permit. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Belarus form a customs union: anyone travelling overland in their own vehicle must carry a customs declaration and temporary import licence valid for the whole stay in all four countries.
