Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 6 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: mfa.gov.ki (Kiribati Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration: Immigration Division and "Immigration Entry and Visa Exemption Order 2023", with the list of exempt countries and the 90-days-in-12-months limit); eur-lex.europa.eu (EU visa waiver agreements: Kiribati, provisional application since 24 June 2016); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Kiribati, updated 3 June 2026: visa price, departure tax, currency, allowances, prohibitions, driving); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/kiribati (UK Government: passport validity, extensions, quarantine). All checked on 6 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Kiribati rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Customs limits

Cash
Spain's Foreign Ministry says the maximum that can be brought in is 5,000 Australian dollars. Outside South Tarawa and Kiritimati there are no banks and cards are not accepted.
Alcohol
1 litre of alcoholic drinks and 1 litre of wine.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 225 grams of tobacco.

Overstay penalties

The one-month stay granted on arrival can be extended a month at a time, up to three more months, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration in Bairiki, as long as the passport remains valid. According to Spain's Foreign Ministry, breaking immigration rules can lead to an entry ban and, where there is an offence, police action.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than six months' validity.
  • Having no onward ticket or means for the stay.
  • Carrying undeclared food, plants or animal products.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

IATI sells its policies according to the country you live in. Where do you live?

Do you need a different visa for South Tarawa, Kiritimati, or Betio?

No. Kiribati sets the requirements, so entering through South Tarawa asks for the same as entering through Kiritimati or Betio. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Kiribati

The Phoenix Islands Protected Area joined the World Heritage List in 2010 and is the largest marine protected area in the world: 408,250 square kilometres of sea and land around one of Kiribati's three island groups. It holds one of the planet's largest intact coral ecosystems, 14 seamounts and some 800 known species, including 200 corals, 500 fish, 18 marine mammals and 44 birds. Spain's Foreign Ministry notes that there are no decompression chambers for divers, that the Tarawa lagoon is polluted and that it is worth asking before swimming.
