Sources: visaonarrival.lis.gov.lr and lis.gov.lr (Liberia Immigration Service: visa on arrival since 11 March 2025, fee, timing, Roberts airport, embassies); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Liberia, updated 25 March 2024: visa for Spaniards, Honorary Consulate in Madrid, extension, yellow fever, customs, risk areas); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/liberia (UK Government: cash, Ebola screening); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 3 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. Liberia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: required. The vaccination booklet may be checked at the border.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash from 10,000 dollars must be declared on entry, and no more than 7,500 dollars can be taken out. Both the Liberian and the US dollar are legal tender, and cards are hardly accepted.
Alcohol
1 litre of wine or 1 litre of spirits.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.

Overstay penalties

The penalty for staying longer than authorised could not be confirmed against an official Liberian source.

Grounds for refusal

  • Arriving without a visa: one is only issued at the airport to travellers holding the portal's prior approval.
  • Not carrying the yellow fever vaccination certificate.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Monrovia, Gbarnga, or Buchanan?

No. Liberia sets the requirements, so entering through Monrovia asks for the same as entering through Gbarnga or Buchanan. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Liberia

Liberia has no properties on the World Heritage List. Spain's Foreign Ministry asks for caution: it recommends avoiding the regions of Nimba, Grand Gedeh, River Gee and Maryland, rates the rest of the country, Monrovia included, as medium risk, and lists no area as trouble-free. It advises against travelling at night or alone, and against going to beaches alone. Healthcare is very poor, so insurance should cover repatriation.
