Verified practical details

You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:

Authorisation system

Embassy visa or visa on arrival with prior online application

Since 11 March 2025, the Liberia Immigration Service has run a visa on arrival that is applied for online before the trip. A PDF with a QR code arrives by email, you must enter within three months, and it is only valid at Roberts International Airport, where fingerprints and a photo are taken and the visa is stuck in the passport. It covers a single visit. Anyone whose country has a Liberian embassy must apply there, not through the portal.

Processing time

The Immigration Service recommends applying for the visa on arrival at least seven days before the flight and no more than three months ahead.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months.
  • An embassy visa or the printed visa-on-arrival approval with its QR code.
  • International certificate of yellow fever vaccination.

Transit rules

Anyone staying more than 30 days needs a residence permit. A visa can be extended once, by 60 days, at the Immigration Office in Sinkor (Monrovia), for 25 dollars. Since May there has been stricter health screening on arrival because of the Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Smoking is banned in all public places, including the street. There is no public transport or taxi between the airport and the capital, about 70 kilometres away, so arrange the transfer in advance. Homosexuality is a criminal offence.
