Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for China, which covers Macao: 90 days visa-free for Spanish citizens, checks between Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China, unofficial stamps, typhoons, currency); customs.gov.mo (Macao Customs Service: table of goods for personal use under Chief Executive Dispatches 209/2021 and 208/2022, and cash transport control under Law 6/2017); gov.mo (FAQ of the extension of authorisation to stay service: overstay fines under Law 16/2021); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/macao (UK Government: passport validity, visa for work or study, travel to mainland China, yellow fever, licensed accommodation); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. Macao rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash and bearer negotiable instruments (traveller's cheques, cheques, bills) worth 120,000 patacas or more must be declared on entry, using the red channel. Failing to do so is fined between 1,000 and 500,000 patacas. Passengers in transit to another destination do not need to declare.
Alcohol
Without declaring: 1 litre of drinks over 30% per person per day.
Tobacco
Without declaring, per person per day: 19 cigarettes, 1 cigar of no more than 3 grams and 25 grams of tobacco, with the total not exceeding 25 grams.

Overstay penalties

Staying beyond the authorisation to stay is an administrative offence (Law 16/2021): a fine of 500 to 800 patacas per day, up to 15,000, payable within ten working days. If the overstay is no longer than 30 days, the person reports to the police or pays as soon as they are found, and has not been fined for the same offence in the past year, their status can be regularised. Otherwise they are removed and may face an entry ban.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than 90 days' validity after departure.
  • Intending to work, study or stay longer without the corresponding visa.
  • A previous overstay that was not regularised.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

IATI sells its policies according to the country you live in. Where do you live?

Do you need a different visa for Macao, Taipa, or Coloane?

No. Macao sets the requirements, so entering through Macao asks for the same as entering through Taipa or Coloane. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Macao

The historic centre of Macao has been on the World Heritage List since 2005, inscribed under China. Portugal administered Macao from the mid-16th century until 1999, and the centre keeps a main street and residential, civic and religious buildings in Portuguese and Chinese styles, plus a fortress and the oldest lighthouse in China. The other side of the territory is the casinos and the big hotel resorts. Macao is often combined with Hong Kong, but there are passport and customs checks between the two. Tap water is safe to drink, unlike in mainland China, and Macao has none of mainland China's internet restrictions.
