Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Macao, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
Visa exemption with its own border control, separate from mainland China
Macao is part of China, but as a Special Administrative Region it has its own immigration and customs controls. Paid work, study or a stay longer than permitted require a visa before arrival. Travelling between Macao, Hong Kong and mainland China means a passport and customs check in each direction, and mainland China requires its own visa or exemption; anyone who enters and leaves Macao through mainland China needs a double or multiple-entry visa to go back in. You may only stay in licensed accommodation: staying in an illegal one can be fined up to 3,000 patacas.
Required documents
- Passport valid for at least 90 days after leaving Macao.
- A visa before arrival, to do paid work, study or stay longer than the exemption allows.
- A booking in licensed accommodation.
Transit rules
The length of the exemption depends on the passport. To travel from Macao to mainland China you must already hold the Chinese visa before reaching the border; without it you risk a fine or detention. Macao drives on the left. In typhoon season, follow the warnings of the Hong Kong Observatory, which also cover Macao.
